Vera Farmiga carries this film on her shoulders as a grieving mother whose adoption of a precocious 9-year-old becomes a descent into paranoia—except she might be right to be paranoid. Isabelle Fuhrman delivers a performance so unnervingly precise that it rivals the child-villain turns in The Ring and The Sixth Sense, playing a character who seems almost too perfect, too articulate, too controlled. Within minutes, you'll be scanning every scene for tells you can't quite name.

The film moves with deliberate, methodical pacing that builds dread rather than cheap jump scares. Director Jaume Collet-Serra frames the family home as a pressure cooker, and the cinematography—all cool blues and harsh shadows—makes safety feel like an illusion. It has the psychological precision of prestige horror (think Hereditary or early A24) wrapped in a mainstream thriller package that never lets you settle.
