The Last Stand
Not in his town. Not on his watch.
Ray Owens is sheriff of the quiet US border town of Sommerton Junction after leaving the LAPD following a bungled operation. Following his escape from the FBI, a notorious drug baron, his gang, and a hostage are heading toward Sommerton Junction where the police are preparing to make a last stand to intercept them before they cross the border. Owens is reluctant to become involved but ultimately joins in with the law enforcement efforts.
Why watch The Last Stand
Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to pure, unapologetic action cinema in his first leading role since retirement—and he's playing a small-town sheriff who transforms from burnt-out has-been into an unstoppable force. Director Kim Jee-woon (the South Korean mastermind behind A Tale of Two Sisters) brings his signature visual precision to a deceptively simple premise: one last stand against a cartel at the Mexican border. What could've been generic becomes operatic.
The film moves with the propulsive rhythm of a Coen Brothers crime thriller crossed with the balletic violence of classic John Woo. Schwarzenegger's weathered, almost resigned performance grounds the escalating chaos—he's not a superhero, he's a man who knows exactly what he's capable of and what it'll cost. Johnny Knoxville's chaotic energy as a local deputy adds texture without derailing the tension, while Jee-woon's camera finds beauty in the desert and brutality in the gunplay.
This is a film that respects both its genre and its audience: tight plotting, zero pretense, maximum impact. If you loved Hell or High Water for its border-town standoff tension or Baby Driver for stylish action filmmaking, the craftsmanship here will satisfy. You'll remember the final confrontation—the way it earns its catharsis without cheap sentiment—for weeks.

Great Comeback for Arnold. Great Action Movie!!!
I was prepared to be disappointed by this comeback by Arnold Schwarzenegger. After all he is fairly far from the shape he once had. Luckily I was not. This is a quite enjoyable movie. Sure it is falls short compared to his previous really hard hitters but it is still a good movie. The plot is okay although a fairly standard one. Escaped criminal races for the border, hero sheriff (good old Schwarzy) stands in his way…Show more
After a very long hiatus from the film industry, Arnie is back! The Last Stand is a cheesy yet epic action movie in 2013. I recommend it as a guilty pleasure.
## Simple and entertaining. Some call it a "guilty pleasure", and yes, it is. At times, characters and acting are like those movies you made with friends at high-school or as freshman (you did, didn't you?). A bit cardboard, but friendly fun, and over-the-top. Well, this has a bit more budget, and Arnie in it (plus a cast of Peter Stormare, Luis Guzman, and a handful of other solid actors). But at heart, it's a…Show more
