The Possession

Fear the demon that doesn't fear God.

HorrorThriller

A young girl buys an antique box at a yard sale, unaware that inside the collectible lives a malicious ancient spirit. The girl's father teams with his ex-wife to find a way to end the curse upon their child.

Why watch The Possession

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick anchor a genuinely unsettling possession tale that trades jump-scares for creeping dread—the kind of horror that lives in the margins of a child's behavior rather than exploding across the screen. What makes this one land harder than typical studio horror is how it weaponizes the everyday: a yard-sale box becomes a Pandora's problem, and a father's helplessness cuts deeper than any CGI contortion ever could.

The film moves with the propulsive efficiency of a prestige thriller (think Insidious before it got baroque), letting tension build through performance rather than noise. Director Ole Bornedal trusts his cast—especially young Natasha Calis, whose subtle shifts from innocent to other are genuinely disquieting—and the pacing never lets you settle. It's lean, focused, and refuses to waste runtime on exposition dumps.

If you're after horror that respects your intelligence and doesn't confuse loudness with scares, this scratches that itch. It's built for viewers who loved the grounded family-in-crisis framework of Hereditary or the methodical dread of early Conjuring films—atmospheric, character-driven, and anchored in real parental terror. You'll spend the final act genuinely uncertain how this ends, and that uncertainty will linger long after the credits roll.

Does it's thing pretty fine, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is perfectly capable, but God I am so over this exact formula cropping up in the genre over and over and over. _The Possession_ doesn't have a single thing that makes it noteworthy. _Final rating:★★ - Had some things that appeal to me, but a poor finished product._
